Guide for Parents

Studying abroad is not a challenge for students but for their parents too, in fact it is tougher for them to send their children to an entirely new place.

It is one of the braver decisions that they have to make for their only assets. But then it is a great opportunity for the children as they will be exposed to an international experience that will widen up their horizons and thinking.

Being one of the bigger challenges for the students, so being a parent it is important to support them and be an active part of this process

To help you through this difficult period, we have prepared a list of seven tips how you can support your child.

Discuss your child’s goals openly

It is very important for a parent to be open with their child and try to understand their reason for going abroad. Sit down and understand why your child wants to go abroad – It is important to know what exactly your child seeks in life to be able to guide or support them.

Be a part of the research process

As a parent take part in researching about the courses your child is interested in, the universities they have been talking about and the kind of lifestyle they would most thrive in. This research will also include information on course curriculum, campus life and accommodations options available abroad.

Understand the upcoming challenges

It’s essential to understand and know the challenges that a parent could face. So, talk to the people who have sent their children abroad to understand their experiences and also learn from the things they have missed during the preparations. This will help the parents to be as specific as they can.

Go for professional counselling

Understanding the Financials

The cost of studying abroad is always more than that of studying in the home country. So, it is very important to know about all the costs involved in the process of studying abroad.  It is a whole lot of responsibility on the parent for arranging the sufficient amount of funds for their children to study abroad. Not only tuition fee but the living costs, medical, visa costs and all other miscellaneous costs are to be included in the budget.  The budget is a mirror image of the financials that will be required for studying overseas.

Plan-out all the Health Check-ups

As a parent, it’s their duty to be very careful and cautious about the child’s health as there will be a huge difference in the temperatures of both the countries and the child will be completely independent. Ensure to get your child’s general physical examination, dental check-up, and a gynaecological check-up (if applicable). If required, ensure they have all the relevant shots and boosters.

If your child wears glasses or contacts, get them a typed copy of their prescription. Help them with an extra pair of spectacles or contacts in case of emergency.

Research on Travel Safety Norms

It can be overwhelming to send the child thousands miles away and that is why it is important to be sure about their travel safety.

  • The child should be insured before he leaves – Travel Insurance
  • Know and research about the local laws and international students rights abided in that country.
  • Ensure they are vaccinated for common diseases in a new destination (Most likely part of the Visa process)
  • Explain and equip the children well with the travel safety kit and also with emergency supplies in case they take time to adjust to the new food.
  • Both parents and the child should keep emergency numbers handy at all times.
